The history of soul vocal stylists the Dells started in 1952, when they were formed in high school in Harvey, Illinois. A year later, they made their record debut on Checker, the Chess subsidiary, but it wasn’t until 1956 that they hit paydirt with the glorious ‘Oh What A Nite.’ We’re remembering a track from their heyday of the late ’60s, a decade that brought them a dozen more R&B chart entries, two of them No.
1s, and considerable pop crossover success. The first hit version of ‘Oh What A Nite,’ and the charming follow-up ‘Stay In My Corner,’ had been on Vee-Jay. But the group returned to Chess in 1966 under the auspices of its Cadet label, which would be their home for eight years. And what years they were, including the remarkable achievement of landing soul chart-toppers with remakes of both of those Vee-Jay hits. Just before the revival of ‘Oh, What A Night,’ as it was now spelt, the Dells entered Billboard’s Bestselling Rhythm & Blues Singles chart on 31 May 1969 with. It was a medley of ‘I Can Sing A Rainbow’ — popularised by in the 1955 film Pete Kelly’s Blues and covered thereafter by Andy Williams, Cilla Black and others — and ‘Love Is Blue.’ The history of the latter song included selection as Luxembourg’s 1967 Eurovision Song Contest entry, sung by Vicky Leandros as ‘L’Amour Est Bleu.’ For the record, it finished fourth, in the year that the UK’s Sandie Shaw was triumphant with ‘Puppet On A String.’ The song was covered as an instrumental by French orchestra leader Paul Mauriat, who took it all the way to No.
‘L’Amour Est Bleu’ was Anglicised by lyricist Brian Blackburn, and the Dells gave it their impassioned and deeply soulful treatment as part of their Cadet medley. ‘I Can Sing A Rainbow/Love Is Blue’ entered the R&B chart at No. 28, climbing to No. 5 and giving them a No. It also gave the group what was, lamentably, their only UK singles chart entry, reaching No. 15 that summer. The Dells’ Cadet years went on to contain several more major hits, after which they recorded for Mercury, ABC and other labels, logging their final chart entry in 1992.
Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, the mighty Dells finally hung up their microphones in 2012, at the end of an unforgettable 60 years of performing. Purchase ‘I Can Sing A Rainbow/Love Is Blue’ on the various artists compilation True Soul.
In the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day the store displays and decorations enticing us to buy things are predominantly the color red, with some pink thrown in for good measure. But what color is love, really? Of course love is an emotion, so the only way it can be a specific color is through our perception. As green has come to symbolize envy and jealousy, yellow with cowardice, blue and black with sadness, we’ve been conditioned and taught that love equals red. Red is the color of heat and flame, and of the heart – all parts of romantic love. Yet, those with emotion-color synesthesia (synesthesia being a condition in which stimulation of one sense triggers another sense) often see love as yellow.
In some synesthetes, love is neither red nor yellow, but blue or another color. The da vinci code full movie. From before 18 th century poet/lyricist Robert Burns’ “My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose” and up through the present day with the hardcore band Love is Red, musicians have attempted to portray the color of love in song.
Love Is Blue Vocal Singing
One of the most well-known love/color songs is late 60’s international smash “Love is Blue”, written by French composers Andre Popp and Pierre Cour. The song has been covered by many artists in both instrumental and vocal versions (I’m partial to, myself) but a close listen to the English lyrics reveals that nowhere in the song does it actually say “love is blue” (despite the title).
The singer’s world is blue (as in sad) because his or her (depending who’s singing the song) lover went away. He/she goes on to namecheck other colors (“my life is grey”, etc.), but never actually assigning love to one. The song is not really about the color, but about how love (or love lost) can make one feel. The original French lyrics are different than the English and more willing to equate a specific color with love: “Blue, blue, love is blue / Blue as the sky that plays in your eyes” and “Love is blue when you take my hand” and further, “Love is blue when I am yours”. So what do we have here?
Blue is not a color of sadness, depression, or loss but the color of happiness. The color of love. They’ve taken the usual blue=sad perception and turned it on its head.
